Wild Swimming - An Urban Mix

On one of the hottest days of the year, my swim sisters and I set out to London on a wild swimming adventure. On our days out we love to try new swim spots and pack in as many dips as possible. We have been to London on a few occasions but today we had three new venues on our radar: The Serpentine, West Reservoir and Redricks Open Water Swimming Lakes (not actually in London - but on our way home), oh and inbetween the first two we planned to visit the Splash exhibition too!
A Refreshing Dip in the Serpentine Lido
After travelling by car, tube and finally walking the remainder of the way we made it to the Serpentine. I think there's something quite special about visiting a new swim spot - that sense of anticipation, the many different sights and sounds. As we approached we passed the Diana memorial fountain which was full of children splashing around, laughing and full of smiling faces - so nice to see!
We found a bench at the side of the water and made base camp. It took us just moments to change - we were all so very hot and couldn't wait for the cool embrace of the water. As we descended the ramp and stepped in, a gentle coolness came up to greet us, offering a soothing contrast to the warmth of the sun. The world seemed to pause as the ripples danced and the water brought a sense of both calm and connection. It was a moment of pure serenity, a stark contrast to the journey and chaos of a bustling capital.

From our vantage point at the water's surface, we watched families laughing and playing in the gentle waves. Along the waters edge ducks and geese gathered in quiet clusters, whilst an elegant swan glided by, indifferent to the world around her. Across the way, people chatted animatedly their voices carried softly by the breeze. Joggers passed by with rhythmic strides, horse riders trotted gracefully and a few boats drifted lazily on the water. The scene was alive with activity, yet it exuded a peaceful charm that made the moment feel timeless.
Feeling suitably cooled and invigorated, we emerged from the water, the warmth of the sun helping to dry us. A delightful treat of cake awaited - well shouldn't all swims be followed by cake? A while later, we strolled through the park toward the Splash exhibition.
Splash! A Century of Swimming and Style
The exhibition, though smaller than I had anticipated, offered a charming glimpse into the evolution of the swimsuit. Each display told a story of design innovation, weaving together history and style. I was particularly impressed by historical pieces that depicted the changing tastes and technologies over the decades.
After a brief pause to enjoy a quick cuppa, we set off once more, making our way across the city. We headed toward West Reservoir, a destination promising yet another tranquil escape amidst the urban landscape. This reservoir spans over 23 acres and is a true paradise for water sports enthusiasts.

West Reservoir - A Hidden Gem
As we turned a corner, we were a little uncertain - it seemed as though we were approaching a mix of a car park and a construction site (turns out the site is undergoing major renovation work - so will soon be even better!). We booked in and made our way back outside into the warm sunshine and were delighted by the picturesque scene that unfolded before us. On one side tall buildings stood as a striking contrast to the tall, grassy reeds on the other, framing the reservoir beautifully. A wooden jetty extended out into the water and from there was line of buoys which divided the watersports area from the swimmers. It looked just perfect!

We found a suitable spot close to the waters edge and changed into our second set of swimgear. This time around we had to don a red swim hat and wear a tow float - Our 'Holy Sh*t It's Cold' caps were a little out of place as the water was a delicious temperature! We wandered down the ramp and launched ourselves in and following the other bright caps we joined the 300m loop taking in our newly found surroundings. We were all in awe of how such a serene and peaceful haven could exist right in the heart of Hackney. It felt like stepping into another world where the bustle of the city melted away the moment we walked through the gate. This little sanctuary offered so much - a perfect place of nature and calm. As we made our way steadily around we could see on the opposite side there was a bunch of kids practicing their sailing skills, their joyous squeals carried on the wind as they capsised their boats then scrambled back aboard. Once our loop was complete we dithered - should we go for one more lap or just bimble around in the shallows - bimble it was - we found ourselves in no rush to leave.
With the knowledge that another swim spot awaited us, we reluctantly left . A short tube journey in a sweltering, stuffy carriage brought us back to the car, where a brief drive took us to Redricks Swimming Lakes. Despite the heat, the promise of another refreshing swim kept us eager to continue our adventure.
A Warm Welcome From Redricks!
Redricks welcomed us with open arms from the moment we pulled into the car park. Friendly, smiling swimmers greeted us warmly, setting the tone for the experience ahead. At reception, a kind and enthusiastic lady explained the system; tow float, hat and wrist band - she instantly made us feel at home as she listened with amazement to the story of our day's adventures so far, her excitement adding to the charm of this already inviting place.
There was a genuine sense of community at Redricks, with people gathered at picnic benches, enjoying a drink after their evening dip. As we changed we struck up conversations with a few locals, eagerly gathering tips and advice about the water.
The sandy entry was pleasant too, especially as we were bare foot. It was a little weedy in places to start with but once we moved past the initial patches we were off! Swimming around the triangular circuit we were joined at various points by others - some serious and clearly focused, others leisurely taking in the surroundings, much like us. Every so often a little fish would leap out of the water, catching us off guard and making us jump, adding a touch of surprise. Along one edge of the lake a massive inflatable floated enticingly, though it wasn't in use it sparked our curiosity and excitement, we made a mental note to enquire about it before we left - after all who can resist the fun of an inflatable?
Having completed our loop, we made our way out of the water feeling refreshed and content. Before leaving, we stopped by reception to thank the kind lady for her warm welcome and of course no visit would be complete without the customary photo by the water, capturing the memory of this special place. With smiles on our faces we set off on our journey home.
Just One More...
When we first planned this adventure we had penciled in a fourth swim spot for the journey back - just in case time allowed and as luck would have it, time was on our side. With excitement building, we set our sights on Lynford Lakes, ready to add one final chapter to an already unforgettable day.
Anticipating a late finish, I had prepared a simple chicken and rice dish and packed the camp stove and pan in the car - just in case. It turned out to be a wise decision as hunger had set in by the time we reached Lynford. We began with a delightful meal savouring the warm hearty dish amidst the woods, a perfect prelude to our final swim of the day.

With our swim kit in hand we made our way along the path and through the bushes looking for a suitable entry point. Despite the late hour, the area was still lively but we managed to find a quiet spot and carefully navigated the steep bank down to the water. The initial warmth of the water was inviting but as we swam further we encountered curious shifts in temperature - warm pockets giving way to sudden coolness, a strange and fascinating sensation. We couldn't swim too far as there was a large bank of thick weed blocking our way so feeling the chill set in we climbed out and decided to dress back at the cars, letting the walk back help dry us off a little.
Finally back in the car and utterly exhausted we began our drive home. As if to crown the day, a full moon rose to greet us, casting its gentle glow over the landscape - a perfect end to an unforgettable adventure.
